Collage Art

My first introduction to collage art was in a creative writing class.

The class focused on “found poetry” and encouraged us to cut words (not quotes, not sentences) out of magazines and then arrange them to make freestyle poetry. Not to date myself, but this was shortly before the little poetry magnet kits became popular. We felt very artistic doing this, and it was shortly after that I began mixing images into my poetry.

The images gradually became the dominant focus (though I’m a writer, I am intensely in awe of artists that work with a visual medium), and I found that making these helps me deal with anxiety.

Of course, it does lead to me hoarding shoe boxes full of little paper scraps, which creates its own anxiety, but such is life.
